For a decade, autonomous trucking was priced as a technology question. It is now an infrastructure and underwriting question, and that shift changes which companies capture the value.

The economics are straightforward. A driver-out lane removes roughly 38 percent of operating cost while extending duty cycles beyond regulated hours-of-service limits. When utilization rises alongside a cost reduction, the effect on unit economics is multiplicative rather than additive.

What the market underestimates is the terminal layer. Autonomous linehaul requires transfer hubs positioned at the edge of metro areas, and the parcels of land that satisfy the requirement are finite and already being optioned quietly by three operators.
